<p>A shifter (30, 200) for an automatic transmission includes a base (31, 31B), a detent (32, 210) member attached to the base, and a shift lever (33, 33B) pivotally attached to the base by a ball and socket pivot (34) for multi-axial movement along a configured shift pattern. The shift pattern includes a first shift path segment (36, SP2X) for shifting the transmission in an automatic mode, a second shift path segment (37, SP1) for shifting the transmission in a manual mode, and a transverse path segment (38, C4) for moving between the first and second path segments. The shift lever is supported on the base for movement along multiple or non-linear shift paths for operating an automatic transmission in automatic and manual shift modes. A positioner (201) is also provided for biasing the shift lever to predetermined positions along the shift paths.</p> |
