The device for protecting the user of a public telephone against bacteria comprises a small bonnet made of tissue or paper. This fits over the mouthpiece of the telephone handset. The material presents a very low porosity not allowing bacteria to pass through it. The material has sufficient elasticity to enable it to be fitted over the mouthpiece and held in place by the elastic tension within the material. The device is preferably a white based colour, although other colours are possible. The material of the device may be impregnated with a perfumed product.
