A description is given of a device which absorbs torque changes stemming from an engine. The device has a variable multi-stage hysteresis mechanism which is characterised in that a first element is rotatable together with an input element and a second element is rotatable together with an output element, the second element being pressed against the first element and sliding on the latter. The first or second element comprises a convex portion which is pressed against the other element and slides on the latter. This makes it possible to vary the frictional force in stages.
