PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a monocarboxylic acid, by hydrolyzing a corre sponding mononitrile by using a bacterium belonging to the genus Alcaligenes, having hydrolyzing activity of mononitrile. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous suspension containing a mononitrile such as acryloni trile, methacrylonitrile, crotononitrile or benzonitrile is reacted with a bacterium such as Alcaligenes sp.AK866N strain (FERM P-9698) belonging to the genus Alcaligenes, capable o hydrolyzing nitrile at 0-30 deg.C, preferably 5-20 deg.C at pH 6-10, preferably pH 7-9 for 0.2-60 hours. |
