The invention relates to a cover which can be lengthened and shortened for guideways of machine tools, consisting of telescoping boxes essentially U-shaped in cross-section and having an end wall which is provided with supporting rollers and is provided with at least one strip-like extension projecting beyond the box periphery. A part or a section of the respectively next larger box comes to bear on the extension when the boxes are pushed together telescopically, a spring element being provided between the strip-like extensions and the parts or sections of the respectively next larger box, and the respective front section of each box being carried by supporting rollers situated at the level of the end wall. The cover is characterised in that the spring element is a spring tongue (14, 20, 21) or a buffer (28) on the strip-like extension (11) of the end wall (7) or on the end wall (7) itself, the free spring or buffer height of which is equal to or is slightly greater than the spacing (b) or the half spacing (b/2) of the roller axes (8a) of the supporting rollers (8) of the boxes (1-5). <IMAGE>
