The magnet rail brake for rail vehicles equipped with a compressed air brake has a switching device which lowers the rail brake magnet 21 onto the surface of the rail, and excites it, only during rapid braking. Additionally, a switching device 6, 26 to 29 is provided which brings about a time-limited lowering of the rail brake magnet 21 during operational braking, the rail brake magnet 21 remaining unexcited. By means of this lowering of the rail brake magnet 21 even during operational braking, the rail brake magnet remains mobile during winter use; possible icing up is eliminated and ejected before it reaches a thickness which could prevent movement. <IMAGE>
