PURPOSE: To obtain a hypoglycemic agent containing polypeptide fraction isolated from bacitracin and exhibiting high anti-insulinase activity and insulin and useful for treatment of diabetes mellitus. CONSTITUTION: This hypoglycemic agent is prepared by treating bacitracin by selective or preferential absorption and/or elution from an absorbent such as cephalose, activated carbon or ion exchanger by using a selective solvent and diluent, buffer solution, etc., to afford a polypeptide fraction exhibiting antiinsulinase activity of at least 5 times (<=20wt.%, especially <=5wt.%) based on raw material bacitracin and including the polypeptide fraction and insulin in an amount of 0.2-20 times by weight based on the above fraction. The hypoglycemic agent can retain insulin in human's or animal's body for a long time. The polypeptide fraction is effective in promoting growth of animals. |
