Process and plant for the thermal decontamination of contaminated, excavated soil

Process for the thermal decontamination of excavated soil contaminated by chemical pollutants, the soil to be treated being subjected to size reduction in a pretreatment stage and, if required, being predried, and the soil reduced in size being subjected to a heat treatment in which the pollutants are removed. The soil reduced in size is subjected to the heat treatment under reduced pressure. The pollutants are driven from the soil at a temperature which is not far above the evaporation temperature of the pollutants as defined thermodynamically by the reduced pressure. The pollutants driven off are condensed. The condensate is collected and is then rendered ineffective (innocuous). A plant for carrying out the process is also described. <IMAGE>
