The used oil is sprayed in a drying room at temperatures of approximately from 150 to 250@C, steam (water vapour) being drawn off. Then the used oil is evaporated in an evaporator battery at temperatures of from approximately 200 to 350@C under a pressure of at most approximately 300 mbar. In the process, the oil is passed through a plurality of successive, indirectly heated evaporator units. In each evaporator unit, the oil first flows downwards in an outer annular chamber and then, in an inner chamber, flows upwards, exposed to stripping steam, in contact with heating elements. Above the oil in the evaporator battery, a stripping steam/oil vapour mixture is pumped off. The mixture is cooled to temperatures of approximately from 100 to 130@C, condensing oil being taken off and stripping steam being drawn off.
