A method for operating a rear-window wiper of a motor vehicle and a device for carrying out the method is proposed, in which the rear-window wiper (30) is switched on when the windscreen wiper (10) is switched on and the reverse gear is engaged. In addition to automatic mode of the rear-window wiper (30), it is possible for the rear-window wiper (30) to be switched on manually with the rear-window wiper switch (32). The overall control (21 to 26, 29) for the windscreen wiper and rear-window wiper (10, 30) is accommodated in a switching device (33). <IMAGE>
