The object of the invention is to provide, for articles of any desired length and size, lining-up possibilities preselectable in any desired manner and having, in a corresponding manner, any desired spacings without regard having to be paid to specified fixed points which, for example, are specified by retractable arresting points. This object is achieved in the invention in that the length of the article and the spacing to be assigned to the article arranged in front and/or behind is determined in a computer and given to a positioning control device by means of which the article, after passing through a starting position, is then moved on a continuously driven roller group and, after achieving its specified travel, is stopped and positioned by braking the assigned roller group.
