PURPOSE:To improve cell performance and durability by using a catalyst carrier partially having graphitized part and remaining amorphous part in an electrode catalyst layer. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black is heated in an atmosphere of inert gas, and fine platinum particles as the first component and fine particles of transition element or rhodium as the second component are bonded to the carbon black, then thery are heated to form a fine catalyst particle 7 in which fine platinum alloy particle 1 is supported on a catalyst carrier 2. The carbon catalyst support 2 is partially graphitized, and the amorphous part of the carbon catalyst support 2 disturbs the crystal growth of the fine platinum particle 1 to optimize its crystalline size. An electrode catalyst layer 5 having excellent performance and high long term stability is obtained. |
