A process which is simple to carry out for separating weakly dissociated organic acids or their salts from strongly dissociated acids, preferably mineral acids by means of an ion exchanger, is characterised by the following process steps: - swelling of a strongly basic anion exchanger in water - and/or passing through of an aqueous solution or dispersion of the organic acid to be purified - replacement of the aqueous phase by the organic phase by means of introduction of an organic solvent into the anion exchanger - single or repeated passing of the contaminated organic acid or its salt, which is dissolved in the organic solvent concerned, through the anion exchanger - if appropriate regeneration of the exhausted exchanger by means of concentrated aqueous alkaline solution.
