Enhancing cholinergic activity with 5-substituted 1-[4-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-2-butynyl]-2-pyrrolidinones and related compounds

There are disclosed compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where R1 is loweralkoxycarbonyl, -CH2OH or -CONR3R4, R3 and R4 being independently hydrogen, loweralkyl or arylloweralkyl; and R2 is -CH2CH=CH2, <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> R5 and R6 being independently loweralkyl or alternatively the group -NR5R6 as a whole being <IMAGE> <IMAGE> R7 being hydrogen, loweralkyl or arylloweralkyl; which are useful for enhancing cholinergic activity in mammals and hence for the treatment of various memory dysfunctions characterized by decreased cholinergic function such as Alzheimer's disease.
