PURPOSE:To always obtain a beautiful image and to prevent the deterioration of a heat generating resistor by providing not only a test printing part and a recovery means but also a reading part on the lateral side of a printing part and reading test printing by the reading means and detecting a non-emitting nozzle to apply recovery operation thereto. CONSTITUTION:When a test printing signal generated at a predetermined cycle is detected, a test pattern is read in a memory apparatus. With respect to this test pattern, for example, fine-dot printing is performed every four nozzles per one head and the nozzles are successively shifted by one emitting orifice. Then, a carriage 8 is positioned at a test printing part 4 to execute test printing. The result of the test printing is read by an optical reading means 10 to be read in the memory apparatus and it is judged whether the read pattern is same to the normal pattern being the test pattern. If both patterns are judged to be same, since a non-emitting orifice is absent, usual printing operation is started. Contrarily, if both patterns are not same, since the non-emitting orifice is present, the carriage 8 is moved to the position of a recovery means 7 to perform recovery operation. |
