PURPOSE:To obtain phenols and isobutylene in high yield and purity, by efficiently decomposing the title compound using a catalyst prepared by heat-treating aluminum phenoxides or alkoxides with a protonic compound. CONSTITUTION:tert-Butyl phenols are efficiently decomposed in the presence of a catalyst prepared by heat-treating aluminum phenoxides or alkoxides with a protonic compound, preferably alcohols or water, preferably at 40-80 deg.C temperature without deactivating the catalyst to recover phenols and isobutylene in high yield and purity, especially useful raw materials are economically recovered from by-products of low utilization value secondarily formed in synthesizing specific tert-butylphenols from the phenols and isobutylene. Furthermore, no substituent group other than tert-butyl groups bound to the tert-butylphenols is decomposed. |
