NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl; R... is optically active group having asymmetric carbon atom; n is 0 or 1) having 1,2- diarenylethane skeleton. EXAMPLE:1-(4'-Alkyloxycarbonylphenyl)-2-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)ethane. USE:A component for chiral smectic liquid crystal composition. Useful as a display element having excellent response of image display. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I having 1,2-diarenylethane skeleton can be produced by reacting a diphenylacetylene compound of formula II with hydrogen. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as Pd/C, Raney-Ni, etc., preferably Pd/C which is easily handleable and available at a low cost. The reaction solvent is preferably ethyl acetate. |
