PURPOSE:To smooth the unevenness of an image and to obtain fine resolution by using a window having the prescribed number of picture elements, comparing the value of each picture element in the window with the value of the center picture element to obtain the mean value of the picture elements less than the prescribed value, and defining said mean value as the value of the center picture element. CONSTITUTION:A window 2 consists of (3X3) picture elements. When a picture element 111 of an original picture 1 is noticed, the element 111 is set at a center block 25 of the window 2. Then the values of the picture elements in nine blocks 21-29 are compared with the value of the element 111 respectively and it is known that the blocks 21, 24, 27, 28 and 29 contain no component picture element of the image 1. The picture elements having the difference from the value of the element 111 set less than the prescribed value R are selected, i.e., the picture elements 111, 112, 121 and 122 only. The mean value of these four picture elements is defined as the value of the element 111. In such a way, the values of the picture elements where the element 111 has the value higher than the prescribed level are excluded out of the averaging process. Thus it is possible to smooth the unevenness of pictures without dulling the edge parts of images and also to obtain the fine image resolution. |
