PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface acoustic wave device with improved filter characteristics within a passband and capable of reducing its size, height and weight. SOLUTION: A surface acoustic wave element T provided with an exciting electrode 2 generating surface acoustic waves on a piezoelectric substrate 1 is mounted on an insulated substrate 4 with the bottom of the electrode 2 forced thereto. A grounding electrode 5 connected to the electrode 2 within the substrate 4 is set to face opposite to the electrode 2. The distance D between the electrodes 2 and 5 is selected to satisfy D>S (1.75×10<4>×λ), where S is the total area of the electrode of the surface acoustic wave element andλis the wavelength of the surface acoustic wave.
