MICROOPTICAL BUILDING BLOCK SYSTEM AND MANUFACTURE THEREOF

PURPOSE: To realize an integrated optical system which has a flexibility and has different optical components directly produced on a substrate by including plural lands and grooves where relief patterns are arranged with first and second preliminarily determined patterns and pairing these patterns in such mode that they are engaged with each other. CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 111 is positioned in a slot which is prescribed by relief pattern elements 102 and 104 on one side and is prescribed by relief pattern elements 103 and 105 on the other side. An optical fiber 112 is positioned in a slot which is prescribed by relief pattern elements 104, 106 on one side and is prescribed by relief pattern elements 107, 108 on the other side. An obliquely cut face 113 of the optical fiber 112 and an oblique face 114 on the same plane of a building block substrate 101 are polished up to an optical quality and are coated with a reflecting or transmissive coating. An end part 115 of the optical fiber 111 is is brought into contact with the side part of the optical fiber 112 adjacently to the obliquely cut face 113.
