PURPOSE:To provide a transparent and inexpensive medical material with high bio-compatibility and oxygen-permeability, by utilizing a crystalline lens of an animal. CONSTITUTION:A crystalline lens has no cells therein and is thus more homogeneous than a cornea. The crystalline lens is taken out of various animals depending on the size, thickness or other conditions required, and forms a transparent medical material. The medical material has the following properties and is thus used for contact lenses or artificial ocular lenses: it has high light- permeability since being made of the transparent crystalline lens; it has neither toxicity nor stimulativeness against an organism but has softness and bio- compatibility since being made of collagen membrane being a bio-derivative; and it has high moisture content and hence high oxygen-permeability since absorbing moisture several times as much as its dried weight and swelling. The oxygen-permeability of the material makes it possible to wear the lenses for a long time. |
