To place the backfilling material during roadway driving, a backfilling apparatus is used which is connected in particular to roadway support machines. This backfilling apparatus with its discharge pipe is thus movable in the longitudinal direction of the roadway, to be precise it is expediently connected in a releasable manner to the roadway support machine. In this arrangement, the discharge pipe or the entire backfilling apparatus is allocated via a travelling carriage to a guide rail and is movable on the latter, the guide rail being curved in accordance with the curve of the support arch and being arranged with parallel axes at a distance from it. The backfilling apparatus or the discharge pipe can thus be moved around the support arch in such a way as to accurately follow the curve of the support arch in order to thus pump or blow the backfilling material uniformly and without re-setting or re-adjustment into the predetermined cavity. The guide rail itself is movable on the monorail conveyor rail in the same way as the entire roadway support machine so that it can also transport the backfilling apparatus at the same time. <IMAGE>
