In a drive unit of a motor vehicle, an input shaft, which can be driven by a drive engine, of a compound mechanism can be drive-connected by means of a first gearwheel stage exclusively using a multiple-disc clutch and by means of a second gearwheel stage using both a multiple-disc clutch and a synchroniser clutch which is located in series and has an output shaft which is drive-connected to an input shaft of a gearbox. The multiple-disc clutches are connected directly to the output shaft. As a result, the masses which are to be synchronised during shifting of the gearbox in the compound mechanism are kept small and the shifting of the latter is made easier.
