PURPOSE:To perform the positioning of a head with high accuracy by utilizing change in the amplitude of a reproducing signal due to off-track. CONSTITUTION:2n (n: integer >= 2) heads 8a and 8b for detecting a position signal whose core width TW' is smaller than track width TW are divided into two head groups consisting of (n) heads, and the heads 8a and 8b for detecting the position signal in the head group are arranged for a data head 5 keeping relation m.TP+ or -1/2 (TW-TW'), where, m: positive integer, and the position signal can be obtained by performing the addition and the rectification in a reverse direction of the signal output of the head group on one side and that of the head group on the other side, and the positioning of the data head 5 is performed by the position signal. In such a way, it is possible to perform the positioning with high accuracy even when a remarkable temperature rise or partial nonuniformity of temperature is generated. |
