The method according to the invention is used in a known coordinating method for traffic light systems in the road system, in which an objective function is calculated for optimising the delay, the optimum delay being characterised by the minimum of this function. According to the invention, the ascent of the curve is determined near the optimum delay time in the direction of the negative and the positive region. It is determined therefrom whether the time during which the lights are green is lengthened or shortened, the favourable direction of change being given by the flatter ascent of the curve. <IMAGE>
