During the turning of bars which are longer than the spindle of the lathe, reducing tubes are screwed to the rear end of the spindle to reduce the vibrations of the bars. The inside diameter of the reducing tubes is slightly greater than the diameter of the bars. This requires the supply of a large number of reducing tubes and high set-up costs when changing bars of different diameter. A device is to be created which prevents these vibrations and can be adapted in a simple manner to different bar diameters. Connected to the spindle via a flange (30) is a tube (1), in the interior of which a centring device is arranged. The latter consists of several articulated rods (7) which are arranged on a circle and run in the direction of the tube axis (24) and are each mounted in a universally jointed manner at their ends in two bushes (4, 9). One bush (4) is mounted in the tube (1) in such a way as to be fixed in terms of rotation but so as to be axially displaceable, while the other bush (9) is mounted in the tube (1) in an axially fixed manner but rotatably and can be secured in the respective rotary position. If the other bush (9) is rotated, the inside diameter is reduced by the articulated rods, in the course of which the articulated rods (7) abut against the bar to be machined. <IMAGE>
