An agent is described for preventing the evaporation of polar liquids, such as surface water and cell tissue fluid. Spherical particles of a size lying in the mu m and mm range comprising plastics synthesised from aromatic monomers, such as polystyrene, or comprising aryl-derivatised macromolecular compounds, such as benzylcellulose, are coated by adsorption with aromatic compounds which can be dissociated by electrolysis, so that in each case 50% of the particles employed as indicated are positively or negatively charged on the surface of polar fluids, on which they form a stable layer of particles which prevents evaporation.
