In an internal combustion engine of the piston type, a control valve (22) is arranged upstream of the engine inlet valve (16) in the inlet channel (14). The control valve (22) is constructed as a directional valve with adjustable opening threshold, preferably as a non-return valve (26) which closes counter to the inflow direction, has an adjustable breakaway force and is opened after any desired delay with respect to the engine inlet valve (16) as a function of selected operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. <IMAGE>
