A locking device (6), in particular for vacuum contacters, prevents inadvertent mechanically-induced actuation of the contacter so long as the electromagnetic drive (1) is not excited. This is achieved by a locking lever (10) pivotally mounted on a bracket (7) between the two parallel coils (3) of the drive (1). A particularly rapid response of the locking lever (10) is achieved by means of a tongue (18) inclined at an acute angle and forming a continuation of the central part (17) of the U- or C-shaped principle element of the locking lever (10).
