In the process described, the starting material is an alloy foil consisting of a precious metal and a less precious metal, preferably a brass foil. A fine palladium/silver layer is deposited electrolytically on one side of the foil. The other side is subjected for several hours to an electrocyclic treatment during which the less precious components are gradually and virtually completely eliminated, leaving behind a porous metal element, preferably of copper, as a support for the palladium/silver membrane. A membrane of this type can be used for selective separation or cleaning of hydrogen gas or as an electrode in alkaline fuel cells or in electrolytic cells. However, the porous metal element can also be used without a palladium coating for various purposes, for example as a catalyst or catalyst support or as a porous electrode material.
|
