An electro-hydraulic control device for an automatic shift transmission of vehicles, especially passenger motor vehicles, is described, which has a torque converter and a planetary gearing with shift elements, essentially comprising couplings (1-3) and brakes (4) and acting on the transmission elements, which shift elements in order to select individual transmission gears can be engaged in changing combinations by the application of hydraulic pressure. At the same time it is proposed that for the application of pressure electrically actuatable gearshift valves (5-8) be assigned to at least some of the shift elements (1-4), which valves in a first position connect a pressure admission line (34, 47, 77, 127), leading to the associated gearshift element, to a connecting line (12, 13), which as a function of the position of a manual control valve, adjustable by the operation of a selector lever, carries the main pressure, and in a second position to an outlet line (33, 63, 108, 109, 130). In order, also in the event of a failure, to ensure safe operation, sufficient at least for transfer to the nearest garage, it is proposed that, in the event of a failure of the power supply, the individual gearshift valves (5-8) be acted upon in order to set them into positions such that pressure is applied to gearshift elements (1-4) obtaining different transmission gears as a function of the position of the selector lever (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
