The assembly 10 includes a pre-mix chamber 18 and a surface mix chamber 24 with an outlet 40. The pre-mix chamber 18 is formed in an elongate backpiece 12 having an oxygen inlet 16 and a gas inlet 20, and is connected via passage 22 to the surface mix chamber 24. The surface mix chamber 24 is divided by plate 30 which is provided with a matrix of holes 32 serving to locate corresponding tubes 34. The tubes 34 form a gas tight (or only partial) seal with plate 30 and at their other ends 38 terminate at a flame outlet 40. Gas passing through the tubes 34 mixes at the flame outlet 40 with oxygen supplied from a second oxygen inlet 43, and a channel 44 supplied with cold water provides a cooling jacket. The assembly may be used solely as a pre-mix or as a surface mix type burner or, by supplying oxygen to both the first and second oxygen inlets, as a combination of the two types having a predetermined ratio of pre-mixed gas to surface mixed gas. <IMAGE> |
