Alkyl aryl ether derivatives of the formula (I)

in which R<1> is a singly or multiply branched alkyl group having 8-20 C atoms, E is a -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH- group and R<2> is an alkyl group having 1-4 C atoms, a hydroxyalkyl group having 2-4 C atoms, an alkoxyalkyl group, hydrogen or a salt-forming cation, are suitable as sebosuppressive active compounds in cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations for topical application to the hair and to the skin.
