PURPOSE:To realize an intersection type optical switch which is operated by total reflection without depending on polarized light by providing intersected light guides and reflecting parts of two multiple quantum well structures having different layer thicknesses on the center line of the intersected part on a semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION:The intersected light guides 10 and the 1st and 2nd multiple quantum well structures MQW 3a, 3b having the different layer thicknesses on the intersected part thereof are provided on the semiconductor substrate 1. The TE component is totally reflected in the MQW reflecting part 3a but the TM component does not feel a change of refractive index and passes, therefore, said reflecting part and arrives at the MQW reflecting part 3b when the light having the parallel polarized light TE and perpendicularly polarized light TM components enter the light guides 10. The TM component senses the decrease of the refractive index in said part and is totally reflected by the same, so that both the components are totally reflected by the MQW reflecting parts. The MQW reflecting parts are formed of two kinds of the MQWs which are change in the well thickness in such a manner, by which the intersection type optical switch using the total reflection without depending on the polarized light is obtd. |
