PURPOSE: To obtain a carbonaceous fiber that contains a specific amount of acidic functional groups in which phenol-acidic functional groups amounts to a specific proportion, thus has improved adhesion to resins and wettability to polar solvents and can give a composite material having improved mechanical properties. CONSTITUTION: In the oxidative treatment of a carbonaceous fiber with a fiber diameter of 0.01-4μm in a mixed gas atmosphere of nitrogen, oxygen and water, the mixed gas containing 0.3-10 vol.% of oxygen, particularly 0.3-5 vol.%, 0.1-10 g/min supply of water per 1 g of fiber, particularly 0.5-5 g/min is fed to a heat- treatment system at 350-1,100 deg.C, particularly at 400-800 deg.C in the oxidation treatment to give the objective carbonaceous fiber that contains the whole acidic functional groups of 2-250μeq/g, particularly 8-150μeq/g where at least 1/2 is phenol-acidic functional groups. In a preferred embodiment, the carbonaceous fiber is produced by introducing a hydrocarbon, a specific organo-transition metal compound and a carrier gas into a hot chamber and the carbonaceous fiber is formed in a suspension state therein and contains the transition metal in an amount of 0.01-2 wt.%. |
