Fuel plus oxidant are reacted above 51 mm Hg pressure in a combustion zone equipped with a flame holder. Feedstock is injected e.g. via wall orifices, axially or radially into the combustion gas flow in the transition zone and the stream obtd. fed to a first reaction zone of bigger internal cross-sectional area than the transition zone. The stream then passes to a throat zone of smaller area than the transition zone and then into a second reaction zone of larger area than the throat. A quench medium is injected into the second zone to terminate the carbon black forming reaction and prod. is sepd. and collected, e.g. using cyclone separator and/or bag filter.
