The tread element for a moving pavement or an escalator has a tread plate (2) where a person to be transported stands. The tread plate has a nosing or edge strip (3) introduced into it and secured to it, on one of its longitudinal edges. To secure the nosing over its whole length to the tread element, the nosing engages along its two longitudinal edges (3a,3b) in each case below a part (6,7) of the tread plate. It also engages between its two longitudinal edges. The nosing is rigidly secured by screws (10) from below to the tread plate. A warning strip of differently coloured nosing may be inserted in the tread plate surface.
