Solid materials (I) which are soluble in water or contain components which are affected by water, esp. flue gas residues, are converted into a water-resistant form by incorporation into an unsatd. polyester resin (II) and curing the plastic material obtd. (III). Pref. (II) is a casting resin; (III) is allowed to post-cure, and is pref. moulded before curing, pref. by hot extrusion, and then coated; (II) is polyester/styrene, pref. contg. polyacrylate dissolved in the monomer, and the polyester has no free reactive end gps., and is water- and solvent-free; (III) is cured with a benzoyl peroxide/amine system; moisture is removed from (I) before incorporation into (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process enables flue gas residues (from furnaces etc.) contg. materials which are toxic or potentially damaging to the environment to be safely disposed of in conventional dumps without special precautions.
