An internal combustion engine, especially for motor vehicles, with at least one intake line for a fuel-air mixture or combustion air for fuel introduced into the combustion chamber and with a fan or a compressor for air supercharging of the intake line is to be designed so that, starting from the engine at rest, as complete a combustion as possible and hence a relatively high starting torque is achieved, even in the starting range. To this end, it is provided, according to the invention, that the compressor or the fan be provided with a drive independent of the internal combustion engine, which can be switched on even whilst the internal combustion engine is at rest and/or immediately at or after the first starting movement of the internal combustion engine.
