Small-size products to be folded, produced by the in-line method are folded longitudinally by means of plough fold stations integrated in the folder of a web-fed rotary printing machine and, if appropriate, by means of formers. Firstly sections of a length containing a plurality of copies are cut down. The cut is effected by the cutting cylinder of the folder during the path over the former or even when a transverse fold is required; a section which cannot be folded by the former runs into the cutting unit of an open sheet delivery device for cutting. In both cases, the web sections are fed at a reduced flow speed to a corner conveyor from which they are conveyed to a rotary slitting device. The rotary slitting device, which is preferably provided with a drum-like counter-cutting device, receives the web sections, which are separated by acceleration, for trimming and forming cutouts. Operation in single layers improves the cutting quality.
