Heterocyclic dihydroxyquinoxaline compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where R1 is C1-12-alkyl which can be optionally substituted by hydroxyl, formyl, carboxyl, carboxyl esters, amides or amines, C3-8-cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl; and where R6 is hydrogen, halogen, CN, CF3, NO2, or OR', where R' is C1-4- alkyl and R5, R7 and R8 are hydrogen, provided that R6 is not CF3, OCH3, NO2, Cl or Br when R1 is CH3; or R6 and R7 are, independently, NO2, halogen, CN, CF3 or OR', where R' is C1-4-alkyl, and R5 and R8 are each hydrogen; or R5 and R6 together form an additional fused aromatic ring which can be substituted by halogen, NO2, CN, CF3 or OR', where R' is C1-4-alkyl, and R7 and R8 are, independently, hydrogen, halogen, CN, CF3, NO2 or OR', where R' is C1-4- alkyl; or R7 and R8 together form an additional fused aromatic ring which can be substituted by halogen, NO2, CN, CF3 or OR', where R' is C1-4-alkyl, and R5 and R6 are, independently, hydrogen, halogen, CN, CF3, NO2 or OR', where R' is C1-4- alkyl. The invention also relates to a method for preparing the compounds, to pharmaceutical preparations thereof, and to their use. The compounds can be used for treating symptoms caused by hyperactivity of the excitatory neurotransmitters, in particular the quisqualate receptors, and especially as neuroleptics.
