The present invention relates to a method for investigating the toxicity or cytoprotection of physiologically active substances. A culture of human endothelial cells is exposed to a shear force in a flowing culture liquid (8) on a glass plate (2) in a cone/plate rheometer. Examination of the function, for example of the adhesion of the endothelial cell cultures to a substrate, provides information about the extent of the toxicity or of the cytoprotective properties of the substance investigated. The method according to the invention is advantageous because the investigation is carried out under approximately physiological conditions. <IMAGE>
