The invention relates to a drive unit, especially a feed module for belted SMD components in automatic fitting machines, in which the required stroke length (20) between two successive pockets (2) is detected and controlled automatically. The drive unit contains rotating parts and control is effected via a duplicated signal transmitter arrangement. This has the two major advantages that no mechanical parts, such as cam drives or tilting levers having extremely high tolerance values, may be used, and the internal drive motor (8) can be switched by means of the signal transmitters (4; 5). The first signal transmitter (4) signals that the stroke length (20) has approximately been reached, at this instant activates the second signal transmitter (5) which stops the drive motor (8) after passing a marker (7) which revolves on the shaft (14), and thus also stops the belt (1) with pockets in a reproducible position. <IMAGE>
