The grinding machine with a rotating grinding wheel (9) and a worktable displaceable to and fro relative to the latter is equipped with a dressing device (2) fixed on the worktable, with the aid of which dressing device the grinding wheel (9) can be dressed and, if appropriate, also shaped. The grinding and dressing are effected via a control (12, 13) in particular a programmed control. The precise position of the tip (6) of the or each dressing element (4, 5) is determined with the aid of a measuring device (7) using a feeler which works with or without contact. In the event of a deviation of the actual value from the desired value, this deviation is set off against the value in the programme. If this grinding machine is now equipped with an additional measuring device (14), it is possible to determine the precise dimensions of the workpiece (11), in particular after grinding. If also a deviation of the actual value from the desired value is found, this difference can also be set off against the values in the programme and taken into account via a new input of the desired value or desired values during the subsequent grinding, on the one hand, and dressing of the grinding wheel, on the other hand. <IMAGE>
