Diesel engines which have to operate with a relatively low compression ratio and with fuels with a relatively low cetane number have ignition problems during cold starting, when operating with a cold engine and when under partial load, with the consequence of high emissions of noise and noxious substances. By combining fuel injection with preinjection and with spark ignition, reliable and exactly defined ignition conditions which result in low emissions of noise and noxious substances are provided over the entire operating range of the engine.
