Positive displacement machines as internal combustion engines, comprising the compressor (1), the combustion chamber (9), the engine (2) and a variable-speed drive (13), inserted between compressor and engine, designed on a simple operating principle so that it can be used in place of piston engines or of gas turbines. The efficiency of the machine is greater than that of piston engines and of turbines due to pulsed combustion and also to the fact that no balancing of masses is necessary on the moving parts. The operating principle is characterised in that a number of spherical cup rings (3) are inserted into one another, that, together with these, spherical cone-shaped, undulatory, opposing working chambers (8) are formed by a helical shaft (4), the volume of which chambers varies, migrating inwards or outwards with the rotation of the shaft. The spherical cup rings perform a tumbling movement. The shaft has a lefthand thread on one side and righthand thread on the opposite side. Sealing of the working chambers is achieved by sealing rings (7) in the spherical cups and by engagement in toothing-like depressions (5) of the housing (6). The pulsed combustion in the combustion chamber with its ignition device (12) and the injection nozzle (11) allows the temperature of all components to be controlled. The arrangement of the variable-speed drive between compressor and engine permits control of the combustion chamber pressure and a speed control ... Original abstract incomplete. <IMAGE>
