Forage, such as grass, lucerne, clover and cereal grain, is preserved by distributing evenly therein urea and a source of urease and maintaining the mixture whereby a fermentation-inhibiting atmosphere of ammonia is generated in and throughout the forage by the reaction of the urea, urease and the moisture from the forage and is retained therein. Use of a dry mixture of urea and urease source, such as soya meal, causes the consumption of moisture resulting in the drying of the forage. Forage produced in summer months can thereby be preserved for use as cattle feed in winter months. |
