The material is sintered in a mould cavity (FH), which is enclosed by mould walls (FW1, FW2) of material of low thermal conductivity and low thermal capacity, for example plastic, which walls are surrounded by chambers (K1, K2) which are connected to the mould cavity (FH) by steam openings (DD), via which the virtually saturated steam is fed from a steam generator (DG) via a steam valve for the purpose of heating to the sintering temperature, the steam condensing in the plastic material during sintering. Subsequently, by means of negative pressure for the purposes of cooling the condensate is evaporated and drawn off into an injector cooling chamber (KK) and a vacuum source (VB, VP). An apparatus for carrying out the method and the control means are specified.
