<p>PURPOSE:To reduce the size of the whole of a device, by a method wherein a pinion shaft serving as an output shaft is driven through a gear mechanism with the aid of an electric motor, and a shaft member on the motor shaft side, connected and disconnected by means of an electromagnetic clutch situated in the middle of the gear mechanism, is superposed with a shaft member on the output shaft side. CONSTITUTION:Coupling with an input shaft 2, coupled to the steering handle side, through a torsion bar 4 is effected. A large gear 10, the side on the rack 5 side of which forms an inclination tooth surface 10a, is situated on a pinion shaft 3 on the steering wheel side. A small gear 12a on a gear shaft 12 rotated with the aid of an electric motor 11 situated on an axis extending at right angles with the pinion shaft 3 is geared with the large gear 10 to form a gear mechanism 13 for transmitting a steering auxiliary force. An electromagnetic clutch 21 to selectively connect and disconnect transmission of rotation between a flangeform member 20 on the motor shaft 11a side and a gear shaft 12 on the pinion shaft side is provided in the middle of the gear mechanism 13.
