An apparatus and method of controlling yaw in a motor vehicle. The apparatus comprises in combination, a rear axle 36 having a pair of independently operable clutches 120a, 120b adapted to drive a respective one of a pair of rear wheels 40. A microprocessor 50 is adapted to receive signals from sensors which include a plurality of speed sensors 56, 58, 60, 62, steering angle sensor 52, a lateral acceleration sensor 65 and a yaw rate sensor 65. The microprocessor provides first and second independent signals 66, 68 for actuating said pair of clutches. The microprocessor includes a means for detecting oversteer (478, 448, figs 12 and 13) and under steer (338, 410, figs 12 and 13). Preferably the clutches are electromagnetically operated. |
